There are two modems which have
been tested; the Thales modem and the Multitech ZDX5600. There is
no configuration necessary when using these modems and they both
work "out of the box". There is no real difference between
the two modems except the cabling setup. One benefit of using the
Multitech ZDX5600 is that it has an internal speaker which can be
useful for diagnostic purposes. This document is written with a view
to highlighting the difference between using a PCMCIA slot and a
SafePort.
Configuring the SafePort
When using SafePort in this configuration it is important that the
SafePort speed it set correctly. In order to check this connect a
DB9 male to female serial cable from a free COM port on your PC to
the serial port on the back of the SafePort. Connect via HyperTerminal
with the following settings:

The SafePort has a limited to set of commands - you can either check
the settings or set them to specific values. To check the settings
use the command *?. To set them use the command *s <baud rate>, <parity_selection>, <word_length>, <stop_bits>.
For example the command *s 57600,n,8,1 sets 57600 baud, no parity,
8 bit words and 1 stop bit. See the SafePort manual for more information.
The only setting we need to check here is that the speed is set
to 57600bps..
Configuring the SafeDial+
The Thales modem connects directly to the SafeDial+, the Multitech
modem should be attached using the DB9 to DB25 serial cable and the
DB9 to FCI 15 way connector supplied with the SafeDial+.
Insert the SafeDial+ with the modem attached into the SafePort.
You should hear a two tone acknowledgement and the "dc" LED
on the front of the SafePort should go out after 20 seconds. The
SafeDial+ can now be used for dial up networking.
