SafeSign Mobile Authentication

Since this type of authentication uses the mobile phone rather than a dedicated security token, it offers a number of advantages to Service Providers:

  • A cost effective means of providing strong authentication protection to their customers, business partners and employees without deploying dedicated security devices.
  • Take advantage of a familiar, well established distribution and support infrastructure in the mobile phone network.
  • Low cost device distribution and support combined with simplified user experience - there is nothing that needs to be physically distributed and users can be provisioned almost instantly over the air.
  • Customers invest their own money and time in owning mobile phones thus they are more likely to look after them and report the matter if they are lost or stolen.

When it comes to banking and electronic payments, mobile phones have some obvious advantages for consumers:

  • People are increasingly comfortable using their phones for multiple purposes.
  • Mobile phones are a pervasive, familiar, always on technology.
  • Mobile Authentication removes the need for customers to carry additional custom devices and cards for stronger authentication
  • Customers can take advantage of a single familiar device rather than learning how to use multiple different devices

Service providers and end users alike can also use Mobile Authentication to take advantage of simplified user login experience, improved user convenience, enhancement of security policies, migration of users to more secure access, reduction of technology and lock in with physical token suppliers and reduction of technology complexity.

The mobile authentication component in the Thales SafeSign product suite provides advanced authentication of users and transactions.

The mobile phone is the most pervasive communications technology in the world and has rapidly emerged as a lifestyle asset, transforming the way we work, communicate and interact.

Although mobile phones were never designed with mobile e-commerce in mind, SafeSign uses the latest technology and an innovative approach to offer banks a simple and yet reliable mobile authentication solution for all online banking, internet based payments and transactions. Passwords are delivered to the user’s handset that, when entered into an online application, authenticate both the user and the particular banking or payment transaction.

This solution is independent of mobile handset type, network technology and network provider, and addresses both the identity authentication and digital signing requirements of online banking and government applications.

There is a range of mobile phone based authentication mechanisms offered, ensuring that the most appropriate level of security is applied to transactions based on their assurance level requirements.

MCode SMS - a text based authentication mechanism introducing a “second channel” to single factor authentication.

MCode OTP - implementing the equivalent functionality of existing security tokens onto a mobile handset through the generation of One Time Passwords.

MCode CR - implementing the equivalent functionality of existing security tokens onto a mobile handset through the generation of a “response” derived from a submitted “challenge”.
